Specialist Perspective on Ageing, Health & Environment

Bringing together academic knowledge, research experience and community engagement to explore issues surrounding ageing, wellbeing, inclusion, communities and environments.

Our Perspective

Knowledge That Connects Research and Community

Populations around the world are ageing, and this brings both opportunities and challenges for individuals, families, communities and institutions. Understanding how people age well, and how communities and environments can support them, matters to all of us.

Castleross Perspective brings together academic knowledge, research experience and community engagement to explore issues surrounding ageing, wellbeing, inclusion, communities and environments. We share this perspective through education, collaboration and practical initiatives.

Research-Informed

Grounded in academic knowledge and evidence from research.

Community-Centred

Shaped through engagement with the people and communities involved.

Practical

Focused on insight that organisations and communities can apply.

Four Focus Areas

Our Focus Areas

Our work is organised around four connected focus areas. Each can be explored on its own, and many projects draw on more than one.

01

Age-Friendly Communities

Exploring how places, services and communities can better support people as they age.

Age-friendly communities enable people to live well, stay connected and take part in community life at every age. We explore how housing, transport, public spaces, services and social networks can be shaped to support older people and benefit everyone.

What this can include
  • Understanding age-friendly principles and frameworks
  • Accessible public spaces, housing and transport
  • Age-friendly services and organisations
  • Social connection and reducing isolation
  • Involving older people in local planning and decision-making
Suited to: Local authorities and public bodies, planners, community organisations and service providers.
02

Healthy & Positive Ageing

Promoting wellbeing, independence and a positive view of later life.

Ageing is a natural part of life, and later life can be a time of continued growth, purpose and contribution. We explore the factors that support health, wellbeing and independence, and challenge negative stereotypes about age.

What this can include
  • Physical, mental and social wellbeing in later life
  • Active ageing and lifelong learning
  • Independence, purpose and quality of life
  • Challenging ageism and age-related stereotypes
  • Planning for a healthy and fulfilling later life
Suited to: Older adults and families, health and social care professionals, employers and community groups.
03

Ageing, Environment & Wellbeing

Understanding how the places we live in shape health and wellbeing as we age.

The physical, social and natural environments around us have a strong influence on wellbeing, particularly in later life. We explore how homes, neighbourhoods, green spaces and changing environmental conditions affect older people, and how environments can be designed to support them.

What this can include
  • Home, neighbourhood and wellbeing
  • Access to green and natural spaces
  • Environmental change, climate and older people
  • Designing supportive and inclusive environments
  • Research and evidence on place and health
Suited to: Planners, housing and environment professionals, researchers, public bodies and community organisations.
04

Inclusion & Community Participation

Supporting everyone to take part fully in community life.

Inclusive communities value the contribution of people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. We explore how barriers to participation can be reduced, and how organisations can engage communities in meaningful and lasting ways.

What this can include
  • Understanding barriers to participation
  • Intergenerational connection and activities
  • Volunteering, civic engagement and community roles
  • Inclusive engagement and co-design approaches
  • Digital inclusion for older people
Suited to: Community organisations, charities, public bodies, educational institutions and service providers.

Our work is educational and research-informed. It does not replace medical, clinical or care advice from qualified professionals.
